Why Canberra Suits School Groups
The programs at the major Canberra institutions are curriculum linked, so the content connects back to units already running in class rather than sitting apart from them. Parliament House covers government and civics, the Australian War Memorial covers Australian history, and Questacon handles the science side, all of it interactive and built for school groups. The galleries and museums fill in the arts and cultural components.
The other advantage is range. A single trip can cover civics, history, science and the arts without repeating itself, which makes it work across different year groups and subject areas. If you are travelling in the cooler months, the Snowy Mountains are close enough to add snow time onto the end of the trip, and plenty of schools do exactly that.
The PACER Rebate
The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate is an Australian Government scheme that helps with the cost of bringing students in Years 4 to 12 to Canberra. It is worked out per student, based on your school's distance from the capital, with additional loadings for regional, remote and lower ICSEA schools. Payment goes directly to the school rather than the tour provider, and it is designed as a subsidy rather than full cost recovery. The increased rebate has been confirmed to continue through 2026 and 2027.
Three conditions shape the trip itself. The primary purpose needs to be civics and citizenship learning, the itinerary needs to include at least three of the four mandatory national institutions, and the application has to be lodged at least three weeks before you travel.

When To Book
School visits to Canberra peak between June and November, and the popular venue sessions fill first. Parliament House takes school groups on weekdays from February to mid-December, excluding public holidays, and bookings can be made up to two years ahead. Once those anchor venues are confirmed, the rest of the itinerary can be built around the times you have secured.
Our education tour bookings are open through to 2030, so there is room to plan several years out if that suits your school’s cycle. Groups working further ahead generally get the pick of both venue sessions and accommodation.
